The K-12 private School invited 3. Fromme Design to collaborate with the staff, faculty, Robert A. M. Stern Architects, and Legends Project Development on the landscapes, gardens, and courtyards related to the new Winn Science Center. The project involved planning and design for a large portion of the School’s western campus, namely achieving a seamless integration among buildings and outdoor spaces developed over several decades.

Design emphasizes every outdoor space’s ability to activate multiple aspects of campus life: creating communal gathering places; offering outdoor classrooms; encouraging informal learning and exploration; and celebrating the School’s identity and tradition. New features include the grand central Ellipse; the ceremonial Cypress Walk; intimate Seating Courtyard; naturalist-inspired Science Courtyard, and engaging Playground.

3. Fromme Design also worked closely with School Faculty and Leadership to develop the Greenhouse: its educational themes, physical spaces, and rich plant collections/displays. The Greenhouse contains three distinct thematic spaces. Students pursue hands-on botanical experimentation and propagation in the Teaching Greenhouse. The Tropical House showcases plant adaptations in jungle ecosystems, including myrmecophytes, lithophytes, and epiphytes. Physiological adaptations and convergent evolution in dryland environments is the focus of the Desert house.

Fromme worked closely with the architects on redesigning the adjacent Library’s porches to integrate them with the new landscapes and existing buildings. Rethinking pathways to achieve accessibility was critical. Dunaway Associates acted as local landscape architect.

The project opened in 2019.
